Create a variety of functional art that celebrates a love for books, language, and visual storytelling through word and image.

First we will make all kinds of fun and beautiful hand painted, stamped, sprayed, and wildly decorated papers. Then use these handmade papers to create your own special books and other items. Each student will carefully plan and bind a unique one-of-a-kind pop-up art book called a ‘flag book’ which tells a visual story with our own photos or drawings. Then we will set our wild side free and explore the art of creating altered books. We will touch on topics such as what it means to make an ‘artist’s statement’ and explore the deeper meaning, impact, and purpose of art and how it affects culture.

With our beautiful papers we will also make boxes, cards, homemade stationary, and little hand-bound books. Other
possible activities include exploring the art of Ex Libris, creating our own personal bookplates, and learning a bit
about the history of (private) libraries and the power of the written word.

Have fun creating ‘mail art’ and reviving the art of handwritten correspondence (great way to put your new calligraphy skills to use too). We will look at award winning decorated envelopes form international artists for further inspiration. We may even be able to participate in an artsy envelope exchange with other art students on the mainland or abroad. The fun and skill gained in this workshop can be used over and over again in the future.

Have fun creating beautiful lettering and improve your handwriting too! In this fun and challenging class students will learn historical handwriting styles and then put them to use in a variety of projects. Have fun creating ‘mail art’ and reviving the art of handwritten correspondence.

Calligraphy is the art of beautiful writing. In this art elective students will gain the basic principles, tools and techniques to create delightful letter-forms, words, and page layouts through a variety of fun projects and exercises. We will practice basic strokes as well as border designs and fancy decorative elements to hand lettering. This class will also introduce historical scripts such as Uncial and Gothic. Students develop a new appreciation for the written word and add a new dimension of meaning to language through the visual arts. This course requires slow and deliberate focus while also offering the opportunity for unique self expression.

Projects include bookmarks, ‘ancient’ looking documents, unique one of a kind cards and stationary, and a special sign for your room. Slide shows of historical to modern calligraphy, lettering and design will be presented. We will study and replicate historical writing styles used by early Roman stone masons (Trajan Capitals), the biblical scribes of the British Isles (Book of Kells), 11th century Northern European Gothic scripts, Humanist Renaissance scripts, and moderns scripts. Calligraphy is fun, rewarding and very useful, and quite addictive once you’ve made the initial effort.

Sacred Geometry is the study of classical proportions found in nature as they relate to mathematics. These proportions were well understood by the Renaissance masters, graphic designers, and is being revived by modern architects. Students will create visually balanced and harmonious designs and patterns ‘magically’ found using a compass and straight edge. Direction in color theory and shading techniques will help guide participants in this class to complete beautiful works of art.

IMAGE AND ALPHABET

Learn the basic principles of art and design through hands on projects, artist slideshows, discussions, and art and design history. Gain an appreciation for the hand lettering arts through an introductory to penmanship and typography. Bring together original images with alphabet art.

PEN INK TO PRINT INK –
BOOK ARTS & THE ADVENT OF TECHNOLOGY
Take a historical journey through the art of beautiful writing and the power of text as art. Throughout the 10-week course students will develop penmanship and calligraphy skills while developing an awareness and appreciation for the Roman alphabet and its use throughout world history.
Projects build up to lessons in modern day use of technology and culminate in the class website project showcasing a portfolio of the students work. Students apply their learning full circle by educating online viewers about the handwriting arts in the age of the keyboard.

This unique curriculum has been developed specifically for middle and high school students and can be applied to homeschoolers or student classes of any type. Optimal class size is 6 to 12 students.

There is no such thing as a mistake in this loose and liberating art class. Students loosen up their creative muscles by playing with a variety of media and mark making tools thus exploring and discovering the individual creative process. In this class students will be exposed to visual problems and then presented with a number of different ways in which to solve them. Students are encouraged to experiment beyond
